The cavalier king charles spaniel is a toy dog that is among the most popular in the UK. The breed has grown in popularity in the United States since 2000. They are a little smaller than some other types of spaniels. The tails are undocked and the coat is silky and smooth. The breed comes in four color varieties. The Blenheim is a beautiful red and white combination. The Tricolor is black, white and tan, the Ruby is a beautiful redhead and the Tan and black is just that.
The breed originated in England. It was a combination of the King Charles Spaniel and some short nosed breeds, believed to include the pug. This was the case from late in the 17th century through the 1920′s. Breeders, at that time tried to reconfigure the dog to resemble the original spaniel.
During World War II there was a huge setback. The majority of the breeding stock were destroyed due to the hardship of the war. The original population of sixty was reduced to three in the 40′s. After the war, there were six dogs that became the starting block which became the ancestors of all future Cavalier King Charles Spaniels.
W. Lyon Brown and Elizabeth Spalding were the first to bring in the United States a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in 1956. They founded the American Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club The American Kennel Club recognized the American Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club in 1997.

The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a larger example of the toy breed. Its historical reputation is that of a lap dog. Today they are still lap dogs with a need to be next to their person. They are smaller than many other spaniels with the height ranging from 12-13 inches, and weighing 10-18 pounds. Their silky coat and beautifully feathered tails, ears and feet contain straight hair with a slight curl permissible by the American Kennel Club.
There is some confusion between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and the English Toy Spaniel. In the UK, the English Toy Spaniel is known as the King Charles Spaniel. In the United States, the Tan and black is know as the King Charles. The two breeds do share a similar history and were one and the same until about one century ago. The King Charles is slightly smaller and the ears of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel are set higher on it’s flat skull. The King Charles has a crown that is more domed. The muzzle of the Cavalier is slightly longer.
The dogs of this breed can be described as being very affectionate, eager to please, playful and quite patient. They will show no fear of larger dogs and can become accustomed easily to new surroundings and other dogs. They will feel good if your family has other pets too. They play a lot as they are quite nosy, and they also love to cuddle in your lap.
