For students in grades K-4, memorization is of the utmost importance in learning new material in school. Teachers of most subjects often rely on tools such as flash cards as a way to stimulate memorization and interactivity. Flashcards are great tools because they not only generate memorization, but it is also a very fun way to learn new material.
Learning a new language can be rough and painstaking at times, but it doesn’t need to be. There are many ways to learn. Flashcards are but one way. Rather than sitting in their desks and facing forward, children can turn this activity into something more relaxed and social. This takes away the stress of a formalized classroom and the attention seeking behaviors that often come with it.
Another reason flashcards could greatly improve your child’s chances of learning Spanish is because it has the ability to compare and contrast the child’s native language with Spanish. For example, a flashcard for “sun” would provide the child with an illustration of the sun as well as the translations of the word in the child’s current language and in Spanish.
Mothers, fathers, and instructors can then ease the child off their native language, providing only the picture and the Spanish vocabulary. This must be done gradually, however. Children can be confused by abrupt changes, or anything that drastically changes the skill level.
Spanish flashcards also allow the child the opportunity to make their own flashcards. This is a great way to have the child practice writing Spanish words as well as learning to recognize and read them. This activity allows the parents and teachers to get even more involved in the learning process. They can coach the child as they make the flashcards, perhaps introducing new words that the child may find challenging and fun to create on their own cards.
Children and grown-ups are often frustrated with learning a new language. It is not an easy task. Flashcards, however, are ways to reinforce the positive, rewarding aspects of learning.
